ROOTSWEB

RootsWeb is an American co-operative organisation which hosts millions of pages of free genealogical data. It is also the home of the Roots Surname List, which lists other researchers of particular surnames, and RootsWeb World Connect, which contains information submitted by family historians all over the world. Largely of U.S. origin, this is the largest free international resource. RootsWeb also hosts a large number of mailing lists about individual counties, places and surnames.

Did you know that there is a Rootsweb list devoted to the name HALE ? To subscribe just send the single command "subscribe" in the body of a message to :
HALE-L-request@rootsweb.com (Almost all of the subscribers are in the USA)

Mailing Lists.

Two formats are available, just choose one..

Mail mode, which means that you will receive every posting made to, e.g. GLOUCESTER as a separate e-mail.
To subscribe just send a message to GLOUCESTER-L-request@rootsweb.com.
that contains (in the body of the message) the command subscribe and no additional text.

Alternatively, Digest mode, (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message).
Send the same message as above to GLOUCESTER-D-request@rootsweb.com

They also have message boards: http://boards.rootsweb.com/
All mailing lists can be found at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/
And RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/

You can search the GLOUCESTER list at : "http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=GLOUCESTER"

Exactly the same process as above applies to the Monmouthshire, Glamorgan or any other mailing lists.

For example:

RootsWeb list for Blaenau Gwent

ORDERING CERTIFICATES ON THE WEB

  • Check out the web site GRO They tell you all about ordering birth, death or marriage certificates from July 1, 1837 up to present day. If you have the index number for the required certificate (can get them from LDS family history centres, although they don't usually list the death index numbers), ie Volume and page number, you can order by credit card (£8 per certificate required). If you can't provide the reference number, the ONS will do a look up of 1 year either side of the year you give them. The cost in total is then £11 per certificate that they do. They will post first class to you within 28 days.
