MILITARY SURVEY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE 1522

The Military Survey of 1522 was the boldest attempt between Domesday and the present to assess the wealth and military strength of the nation. The following are HALE extracts from the county of Gloucestershire.

(ALL HALE)

A glaive was a shafted weapon of the halberd type. A Bill was a shafted weapon with a curved blade. A forest bill has a long spike behind the blade. A Sallet was a helmet with (usually) a hinged visor and a long tail for protecting the back of the neck.

MEN AND ARMOUR FOR GLOUCESTERSHIRE

There were many examples of the names around in 1608 when John Smith of North Nybley produced his magnificant genealogical masterpiece Men and Armour for Gloucestershire. This mighty work lists EVERY adult male in the County (including John Smith himself,) and is the result of a command from King James I. We have extracted the names HALE, HALES, HALL, HALLE. There is 1 (one) HALES,
17 (seventeen) HALLs, (27) twenty-seven HALEs and 79 (seventy-nine) HALLEs as well as variants like Haull and Hayle.
PLEASE NOTE : Because of the variations in spelling at the time it's not unknown to find father and son who are living in the same village listed under different names e.g Hale and Halle.
Names of people can also vary on the same page. An example of this can be found at Bradley Northlatch (now Northleach) where there is an entry for ' THOMAS HAULE,' followed by ' RICHARD HALLE servant to the said THOMAS HALLE. '

[Abbreviations: The person was : (1) about twenty; (2) about fforty; (3) betweene fyfty and threescore :
He was : (p) - of the tallest stature fitt to make a pykeman ; (m) - of a middle stature fitt to make a musketyer ; (ca) - of a lower stature ffit to serve with a calyver (i.e a light musket) ; (py) - or the meanest stature either fit for a pyoner, or of little other use :
(tr) shewed that at the taking of this viewe, hee was then a trayned soldyer ; (sub) sheweth that the said man was a subsidy man]

From : The Berkeley M/ss. - A description of the Hundred of Berkeley , John Smyth Vol III (1605) Pub. MDCCCLXXXV by the Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (This HALL family, which earlier had been HALLE later became HALE. WILLIAM HALL senior is listed in ' Men and Armour ' aged about sixty at Alkington. The author of the Berkeley manuscripts is the same John Smith , with a different spelling, who produced the above named Men and Armour for Gloucestershire. )
